HIV & AGING: LIVING LONG and WELL!
Thursday, March 28, 2013 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM
New York, NY
New York Buyers' Club presents
“HIV & AGING:
LIVING LONG and WELL!”
PLAIN TALK ABOUT LIVING A LONGER, HEALTHIER LIFE WITH HIV
With Special Guest Dr. Stephen Karpiak of ACRIA
(AIDS Community Research Initiative of America)
By 2015, more than 50% of the United States’ HIV population will be over 50.
There are approximately 120,750 people living with HIV/AIDS in NYC;
43% are over age 50, 75% are over age 40.Over 30% are coinfected with Hepatitis.
What does the future hold for people with HIV as they get older?
While improved HIV medications have made longer, healthier lives for PWHIV (People With HIV) possible, the path to sustained good health is not always clear. An array of health concerns, compounded by HIV, can pose serious threats: heart and cardiovascular issues, cancers, cognitive and neurological problems, and joint and bone problems.
In this free seminar, learn about evolving health management changes reflecting a shift from toward multimorbidity management (managing several medical conditions at once), emerging information, and ways HIVers can improve their lives now to increase vitality and longevity.
A participatory Question & Answer session will follow the presentation.
Light refreshments will be served.
Dr. Stephen Karpiak has been working in the field of HIV and aging research for a dozen years after a 25 years as a researcher at Columbia University Medical School. He joined ACRIA in 2002 where he developed age-focused research, serving as lead investigator for their groundbreaking Research on Older Adults with HIV (ROAH) study.
